Delores “Peggy” Burns celebrates her 100th birthday at Trailpoint Village. Peggy was born in Logansport, IN. She was married to George Collins for “too many years to remember,” she said as she laughed. They had one son named Skip. Skip passed away three years ago. She was a school teacher at Swanson Elementary School for 25 years. She also loved doing housework and tending her garden. Her current favorite pastime is solving crossword puzzles and word searches. Peggy’s advice for longevity is “Be a Christian,” and go to church all the time.

Dessie Sturgeon is proud to be the mother of two sons, one of whom helped with the first moon walk and the other who is now a college professor. She likes watching the stock market but for years she relaxed by taking winter trips to Florida.

Dora Ross was a smart young lady. She graduated salutatorian and says, “Learning always came easy to me.” Math was her favorite subject, so she went on to become a bank teller for 21 years. Dora’s life advice is, “Life is preparation for whatever comes afterward. I had a lot of happiness and sadness in my life, but it was all for a reason.”

Dorothy Combs loves playing cards. She also loves fashion and dancing. She was employed several years at William H. Block Co. department store in downtown Indianapolis, where she worked in the cashier’s office and at Lazarus in the houseware department. After retiring, she returned to work as a grocery store food sample hostess. She did this until her late 80s, and she drove until she was 92. She was born in Indianapolis and grew up in the Fountain Square area. Her husband, John Combs, preceded her in death in 1987. She has one son, John.

Dorothy Jernigan started her career as a pediatric Navy nurse in Miami, Florida. She continued her career after moving to Fort Wayne, where she worked in a hospital. She finished her career as an assistant director of nursing. Dorothy never smoked or drank alcohol. She always ate a balanced diet and exercised as much as possible. Her faith in God and her strong family values propelled her long journey in life.

Beech Grove Meadows had a wonderful time celebrating our lovely resident Dorothy Johnson on her 100th birthday on October 26th.

Dorothy was born on October 26th, 1923. Her hometown is Mississippi, and her family, in particular her brother and sister, are very important to her. An important role she had was when she had to quit school as a child and work hard alongside her father, picking cotton. Dorothy enjoys singing and listening to gospel and dance music. She likes to be friends with everyone she meets. Her best day ever was the day she got married. Dorothy’s best advice is, “Don’t lie.” She shared that the Lord helped her get here, and she is proud and blessed to have lived to 100 years young!

Earl was born in Jennings County. He served in the Air Force for four years  during WWII, ending his career as a Sergeant.

Earl loved hunting and going fishing. He was married for over 40 years to the late Helen Schneider. In his spare time he enjoys watching sports, especially baseball.

When asked if he had any words of wisdom, Earl said, “Live it up!”

East Lake Nursing and Rehabilitation Center celebrated our gorgeous resident Edeline “Agnes” Grahmbeek’s 100th birthday!

Family, friends, fellow residents, and team members here at East Lake Nursing and Rehabilitation Center are joining in the festivities honoring Agnes with a very special party today. One of her two sons will be traveling from Seattle for the celebration!

Agnes was born in Indonesia, moved to Holland, and later to Elkhart, IN with her two sons. She speaks multiple languages, including three native languages, Dutch, German, and French. As a former language teacher in Indonesia, her passion for language continues to inspire us all. Agnes is also a long-time member of the Presbyterian church.

Her favorite color is blue, and she loves her coffee & cookies! Agnes’ joyful spirit and smile light up any room, endearing her to everyone who knows her.

As Agnes celebrates this significant milestone, her positivity and resilience serve as reminders of the power of the human spirit. Her life story, full of travel, adventure, motherhood, and dedication to education, is a testament to her enduring impact on many lives worldwide.
