Imagine navigating life against the backdrop of the Jazz Age, the Great Depression, two world wars, the Space Age, the Digital Age and many other historical events. The remarkable centenarians we serve and have been privileged to serve garnered a wealth of knowledge and wisdom that only living 100 or more years can bring.

Edith Hallett

February 22, 1918

Edith Hallett is an absolute joy to be around. She loves playing games and spending time doing arts & crafts in the community. Edith is from Indianapolis, Indiana. She was married 68 years and had 8 children. Throughout Edith’s career, she has been a college professor, business manager, diner worker and designer. Some of her hobbies include carving, building, gardening and art. Edith’s tip for living 100+ years is, “Eat organic food and follow Jesus Christ.” Happy 106th Birthday, Edith!

Edna Bonnell

February 19, 1923

Hickory Creek at Winamac recently celebrated 101-derful years with Mrs. Edna Bonnell. We playfully asked Edna if she was 21 she said yes, except she feels 101.

Edna was born and raised in Pulaski County, she is a high school graduate and a mother of 4, one of her sons passed in 2014 and her husband passed prior to that. She used to work at the local grocery store and volunteered at her church, St. Peters. Edna played the piano and the organ for her church and here at Hickory Creek at Winamac as a volunteer as well. Her tips for living 100+ years is to be happy, don’t be grumpy. She enjoys playing Bingo, visiting with others, sitting in the sun and watching “Wheel of Fortune” and “The Price is Right.” She has recently taken interest in a Baby Doll that she has affectionately named “Tootsie.” She enjoys showing Tootsie to her visitors.

Edna Bowman

May 20, 1911

Edna Bowman was a very active woman. She enjoyed going outside, fishing, traveling, playing bridge, reading, cooking and knitting special things for others. To live a long life, she said, “Eat well and go to bed early. That is how you live a good life.”

Edna Schultz

June 7, 1910

Edna Schultz enjoyed life to its fullest, attending music events and always having a smile on her face. At Meadow Lakes, she was known for her bright smile and frequent visits to other residents.

Edna Sutton

September 8, 1912

Born in Huntington, Indiana, Mrs. Sutton was married to Ralph Sutton. She had five step-children and 20 grandchildren. She was a buyer for International Harvester until her retirement in the 1980s. Her advice for a long life: volunteer, stay busy, get involved in church, travel when you can and have an active social life.

Eileen Lavonne Justice

May 7, 1924

We are celebrating our resident and dear friend Miss Eileen Lavonne Justice’s 100th Birthday!

Born and raised in Anderson, IN, Eileen’s a proud mom of 2 and grandma to 6 adorable grandkids. From washing dishes in restaurants to serving up scoops in an ice cream parlor, she’s done it all! Now, at Edgewater Woods, she finds joy in the simple things – cuddling her stuffed animals and dominating bingo! Her secret to living 100+? “Never care what people say about you, live life to the fullest!”

Eileen Weber

June 19, 1922

Heritage Park is celebrating resident Eileen Weber as she turns 101 with a party in her honor on Monday, June 19th.

Eileen Weber was born and raised in Fort Wayne. She was married for many years and had three children. One of her most interesting accomplishments was singing on a Chicago radio station with her singing group, The Three Shades. The singing group was part of a long-running morning variety show called The Breakfast Club, hosted by national radio personality Don McNeil on NBC Blue Network/ABC Radio in Chicago.

Eileen is a proud grandmother and loves to talk about her family, especially her wonderful children. She has always enjoyed socializing and loves talking about the past and how different things are now. She is very fond of her aide Jessica at Heritage Park, and enjoys playing bingo. Eileen says that the secret to her longevity is because she “always listened to her parents” and because she takes good care of herself, taking her vitamins and not drinking or smoking.

Ella Mathis

August 29, 1914

Ella Mathis has two daughters, Lillian Gold and Maelean Williams, seven grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, 32 great, great grandchildren, and eight great, great, great grandchildren. She operated a beauty shop for several years and was a member of Union Baptist Church.  She says her secret to longevity is her spirituality.

Ellanore Hartman

March 19, 1921

Ellanore Hartman was born in Marion County, Indiana on March 19, 1921. She was raised on a farm as an only child and spent most of her time in the company of animals. From this farm lifestyle, she cultivated a love of gardening. She finds joy in her potted plants and flowers. She was blessed with two children. She has one granddaughter and two great-grandsons. She has said that her favorite job was being a midwife and delivering babies into the world. She was married to her husband Ervin for 50 years. She is an avid lover of animals, especially cats. She loves to watch the news, especially Randy Ollis on channel 8. In fact, he even came to surprise her for her 100th birthday celebration! As we look back at her 100 years on this earth, we celebrate the many things she has achieved and seen in her long and full life.

Elsie Hofmann

August 8, 1924

Born in Michigan on August 8th, 1924, Elsie Hoffman has lived an extraordinary life. She married Donald Hofmann and together they raised 6 wonderful children. Elsie dedicated her early years to working at Wright Patterson Air Force Base and was an active Girl Scout and 4H Leader. As Treasurer for First Baptist Church, she exemplified dedication to her community.

Her spirit of service didn’t stop there—Elsie proudly volunteered at the hospital for over 50 years! At 92, she carried the torch representing Fayette Co. for Indiana’s Bicentennial. In 2019, she was honored with the prestigious Golden Hoosier Award by Lt. Governor Suzanne Crouch, one of the highest recognitions bestowed on a senior citizen in Indiana.
