National Occupational Therapy Month

The month of April recognizes National Occupational Therapy Month. Occupational Therapists help people across all ages continue to do the things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of daily activities. They enable people of all ages to live life to its fullest by helping them promote health, and prevent – or live better with – injury, illness or disability. Occupational therapists teach people how to adapt and learn how to use assistive devices if they need them to perform tasks.

Occupational therapists utilize a holistic perspective which includes psychosocial, sensorimotor and cognitive aspects which focus on adapting the environment and task to fit the person. The person being treated is an integral part of the therapy team. Evidence-based practice rooted in science is utilized in conjunction with customized approaches to assist in regaining skills and aid seniors to remain as independent as possible.

At American Senior Communities (ASC), we are very proud of our Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants. They improve the lives of our seniors who need assistance with their activities of daily living, work on recovering from injury to regain skills and provide support for older adults experiencing physical and cognitive changes. At ASC, we have the opportunity to witness the many contributions of our hundreds of Occupational Therapists as they achieve results through patient-centered treatment programs.

Occupational therapy services typically include:

  • An individualized evaluation, during which the client/family and occupational therapist determine the person’s goals.
  • Customized intervention to improve the person’s ability to perform daily activities and reach the goals.
  • An outcome evaluation to ensure that the goals are being met and/or make changes to the intervention plan.

Occupational therapy is changing lives. From all of us at American Senior Communities, thank you to all the Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants on our team and all across the nation who spend their time improving the lives of those around them.
