Many other older adults eventually find that the home they love was not built with the accommodations they need as age-related changes in balance, strength and mobility arise. When tasks that once were simple become more challenging, those daily activities can be made less daunting with some simple modifications. As the largest senior living provider in Indiana, American Senior Communities (ASC) is proud to partner with CICOA as a Leading Sponsor because together, we are dedicated to serving Indiana seniors. One of CICOA’s services is coordinating an annual Safe at Home event. This community service event serves senior homeowners in an Indianapolis neighborhood on a Saturday morning in September. Thanks to sponsorships from benefactors such as ASC, community partners and volunteers, CICOA coordinates a day where volunteer teams work to transform homes with accessibility modifications and yard cleanup. Many hands come together to make swift improvements to help older adults live safely and independently in the homes and neighborhoods that they love.
These events are targeted to serve homeowners when they need help with home accessibility modifications to promote independence and prevent falls, helping to keep them safe at home. Home improvements that promote accessibility and prevent accidents include adding grab bars and handrails, replacing standard round doorknobs, or faucets with lever handles, installing wheelchair ramps and/or stairway handrails, and more.
Through CICOA, several funding sources are available to assist eligible individuals with the cost of home modifications. Eligibility includes Marion County homeowners, 60 years of age and older, or persons with disabilities of any age.
More than simply providing financial sponsorship, ASC recently coordinated a team of employees to donate their time and talent on a Saturday morning. Together, our volunteers helped to improve twenty homes in an Irvington neighborhood, providing home modifications and yard cleanup for area residents.
