August is Family Fun Month!

While summer may be coming to a close for the kids within the next few weeks, there’s still plenty of time to enjoy spending some quality time together. August is designated as Family Fun Month, making it the perfect time to take part in some fun family activities before the school year gets back in full swing.

Celebrate Family Fun Month with these Activities

Not sure what to do to make the most of the rest of summer with your family? Here are just a few activities to do with kids to provide some special, long-lasting memories:

Take a day-long roadtrip. You don’t necessarily have to travel great distances to see some new sights! Do a little research and find family-friendly areas you’ve never been to that are all within a day’s drive. Parks, playgrounds, and interesting landmarks are all great places to take the grandkids.

Go on a picnic in a park. Pack up a picnic basket with your favorite sandwiches and snacks and go to a nearby park for a  picnic under a tree. Bring some lawn games or a ball to toss around with the grandkids, too, to make a day out of it.

Create a scavenger hunt. Write up a list of items for the grandchildren to find around your house, yard or neighborhood. Make sure to have a prize ready for the child who finds all the items first!

Head to the zoo. The zoo is the perfect place to take kids on a beautiful summer day; all children enjoy seeing and learning about exotic animals from all over the world. If you’re in the Indianapolis area, head to White River State Park to visit the amazing Indianapolis Zoo, the first zoo in the nation to be accredited as a zoo, an aquarium, and a botanical garden. There is something for everyone to enjoy!

Go to a museum. If it’s simply too hot to be outside, enjoy the air conditioning and exhibits at a local museum. The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is the perfect place to spend a balmy day inside with the grandkids! It’s the world’s largest children’s museum and houses over 120,000 artifacts and specimens, such as the American Collection, Natural Science Collection and the World Cultures Collection.

Enjoy movies and snacks under the stars. Turn your backyard into an outside movie theater by hanging a sheet on the back of your home or garage and firing up the projector. Pop the popcorn and settle into your favorite lawn chair to watch some movies while enjoying the cooler night air.

Make homemade ice cream. Find a recipe online and make some homemade ice cream with the grandkids’ assistance. Set up a sundae bar with toppings like sprinkles, crushed cookies, hot fudge, whipped cream, cherries and more. Indulge in a tasty, made-from-scratch treat.

Host a family game night. Keep things simple! Break out some board games or card games, order a few pizzas and invite your children and grandchildren over for game night – one of the most-loved family activities.
