Your Most Common Questions Answered
What is an assisted living community?
Assisted living communities are residential settings for older adults who need help with daily tasks, such as bathing, dressing, medication management or meal preparation. Unlike in a skilled nursing center, residents in these communities don’t require care for complex medical issues. Their support needs are primarily related to personal care and daily living.
These communities offer residents private apartments or suites, social and wellness activities, meals, transportation and access to caregivers 24/7. This senior living option is often considered the best of two worlds: privacy/independence with support available around-the-clock.
What happens if my loved one’s needs change over time?
Most assisted living communities are prepared to adjust a resident’s care plan as their needs evolve. Services are often tiered or personalized, so more or different care can be accommodated as a resident’s health changes. If medical needs exceed what the community can provide (i.e., advanced dementia care or skilled nursing), the team will help coordinate a transition to a setting that can provide a higher level of care, such as a memory care community or a skilled nursing center. These are sometimes even on the same campus as the assisted living community.
Are pets allowed in assisted living?
Many assisted living communities are pet friendly, recognizing the emotional and physical benefits pets offer seniors. Policies vary, so check size, breed and number restrictions. Residents must typically be able to care for their pet or arrange for assistance. A security deposit for the pet will likely be required.
Is there a doctor on-site or overseeing care?
Assisted living communities typically do not have a full-time doctor on-site, but many partner with physicians, nurse practitioners or visiting healthcare providers who regularly come to the community to see residents. Day-to-day care is often overseen by licensed nurses, who monitor health changes, manage medication administration and coordinate care with medical directors.
How much does assisted living cost, and is it covered by insurance?
Costs vary based on location, apartment size and how much care a resident requires. The national average in the US is around $4,500–$6,000 per month. And in Indiana, the average is around $5,365 a month, according to a 2024 Genworth Financial survey.
Unfortunately, traditional Medicare doesn’t cover assisted living costs. But there are other programs that lend financial support. Those can include long-term care insurance, veterans’ benefits, and Medicaid (in some states).
What services are typically included in the monthly fee?
The monthly fees for many assisted living communities include:
- Private apartment or suite
- Housekeeping and laundry
- Daily meals and snacks
- 24/7 staff support
- Activities and wellness programs
- Transportation to appointments
A separate fee is often charged for additional care services (such as help with bathing or medication) based on the resident’s unique needs.
Can couples live together in assisted living?
Yes. Most communities offer shared apartments or suites for couples. Care is tailored to each person, so even if one partner needs more assistance than the other, they can usually stay together. There might be exceptions, such as when one partner requires memory care services or has complex medical needs that require a skilled nursing care center.
Can residents come and go freely?
In most assisted living communities, residents are free to come and go as they wish. While the community might be locked to outside visitors in the evening and overnight, there is usually a system in place that allows residents to get in and out after hours.
