The remarkable centenarians we serve at American Senior Communities possess a wealth of knowledge and are living historical treasures.

Betty Deree

January 7, 1920

Betty Deree loves being a mother. In fact, aside from her faith, being a mother was the most important thing to her. She often says her favorite days were when she gave birth to her daughters. Her advice to everyone is to eat lots of candy!

Betty Jean Hall

February 2, 1924

Beech Grove Meadows celebrated resident Betty Hall with friends and family on February 2 for her 100th birthday! Originally from Remington, Indiana, Betty, who has one daughter, fondly reminisced about her time working at a grocery store. Reflecting on her life, Betty treasures her upbringing and the valuable lessons instilled by her parents. Her advice on living a good life includes doing everything the best you can and living a clean life whether at work or at home. Happy 100th birthday, Betty!

Betty Price

April 4, 1923

Betty Price was born in Logansport, IN on 4/4/1923. She has 3 children, 4 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. She worked at Purdue University for 26 years. Betty enjoys reading, crossword puzzles, scrabble and playing Euchre. She thanks God for blessing her with a long life so she could be able to be with all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Betty Whiteleather

December 7, 1921

Born in Pierceton, Indiana, on December 7, 1921, Betty spent her married life in Fort Wayne, creating a loving home for her family while working as an ‘Avon Lady’. She and her husband, Max, shared over 70 wonderful years together, raising three children: Dennis, Marsha, and Rex. Betty’s talents include sewing, cooking, and quilting—and her secret to living past 100? “Don’t,” she said with a playful wink!

February 5, 1919

This lovely lady recently marked her 105th birthday surrounded by loved ones at American Village Lincoln Lodge! Betty, a cherished member of our community for 18 years, originally hails from Buffalo, NY. Married to Stewart, they raised two wonderful children together. Before embracing the joys of motherhood, Betty devoted her talents as a cost accountant at the National Gypsum Company. In her free time, Betty enjoys in card-making, knitting and crocheting. When asked her secrets to a long and fulfilling life, Betty said, “Trusting in the Lord and starting each day with purpose and presentation.” Wonderful advice! Happy 105th Birthday, Betty!

Byron “Pop” Wadsworth

December 2, 1922

Rosebud Village recently celebrated the 101st birthday of resident Byron “Pop” Wadsworth. The momentous occasion was marked with family, friends, cake, presents and camaraderie at his senior care community.

Byron was born on December 2, 1922 in Richmond, and spent many years of his life in Michigan as well. Married to his late spouse for 68 years, Byron is also the father of two sons, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A proud veteran, Byron said that he had a pet monkey during the war! A train and racing car enthusiast, Bryon worked as a racing car owner and participated in races in Daytona Beach, Florida. Adventurous at heart, Byron also spent many years working for the railroads and he was a volunteer firefighter.

Today, Byron enjoys drawing, painting and spending time with family. When asked his advice on living beyond 100 he remarked, “Just do what you’re supposed to do when you’re supposed to do it!”

Carmen Leffler

November 25, 1917

Carmen Leffler enjoys sewing, gardening and doing her and her friends’ hair. Her advice for living a long life is to always work hard.

Carminta Wright

June 24, 1913

Born June 24, 1913 in Mooresville, Mrs. Wright was married for 65 years. She has two children, Phyllis Wright and Royce Buckner. She was a homemaker.

She attended a Christian church in Mooresville, where she taught Sunday school for 20 years. She enjoys singing, listening to music and spending time with her children.

Carrie Braggs

October 15, 1909

The year Carrie Braggs was born, the first Lincoln head penny was issued, the Indianapolis 500 Race Track opened, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was organized. Mrs Braggs remained very sharp and witty throughout all her years. To live as long as Carrie Lee Braggs has lived, doctors suggest you stay active and eat lots of fruits and vegetables, and Carrie said she did just that. She also attributes living a healthy life to her faith and belief in God.
