National Senior Health and Fitness Day 2017

On Wednesday, May 31, 2017, more than 1,000 local organizations throughout the country will participate in the 24th annual National Senior Health and Fitness Day. This event is the nation’s largest annual health promotion event for older adults, with the common goal of helping seniors find ways to stay healthy and fit. National Senior Health and Fitness Day is always held on the last Wednesday in May, and is organized by the Mature Market Resource Center, a national information clearinghouse for the older adult market.

More than 100,000 seniors will actively participate in local events held at retirement communities, health clubs, senior centers, park districts, hospitals, YMCAs, churches and other community locations.

Improving Health with Exercise for Seniors

The theme of the 2017 National Senior Health and Fitness Day is “With Movement…There’s Improvement!” It’s an appropriate theme, especially because exercise for seniors provides so many health benefits and opportunities to improve your overall quality of life.

Of course, staying physically active is important for those of all ages. However, as you age, it becomes more common to live a sedentary lifestyle, thinking that there’s just simply not enough time in the day to exercise. Plus, seniors start to lose bone density, muscle mass and flexibility, and conditions like arthritis or osteoporosis can make it difficult or painful to move.

However, inactivity causes more issues for seniors. Studies reveal that being sedentary for up to four hours a day, as 20-35 percent of Americans are, is linked to health problems like cognitive decline, diabetes, physical disabilities and even decreased longevity! But, there’s plenty of evidence that suggests adding exercise to a daily routine in your older years helps decrease the risk for those issues; for example, exercise helps increase bone density, which helps prevent osteoporosis. Plus, mobility and agility improve, helping decrease the risk for a fall. Exercise also helps your mind feel sharper and boosts your mood.
