National Senior Independence Month – UPDATED

Is living an independent lifestyle important to you? No matter what changes you encounter as you age, for most people it’s crucial to maintain one’s independence. February is National Senior Independence Month, so American Senior Communities is taking the opportunity to give you a few tips on how you can stay independent as you age while still allowing friends and family to know that you’re safe.

Focus on Safety Around the House

If you’re trying to “age in place,” it won’t hurt to make some upgrades to your home that will give you and your family peace of mind. First, be sure to make any repairs you’ve been putting off; some of them (a loose railing on the stairs, for instance) can create unsafe conditions. Once you’ve got all those items taken care of, you can start adding some new features that prioritize your safety. Try installing some grab bars in the shower and around the toilet to help you avoid falls. If you have limited mobility, a stair lift may be another upgrade to consider.

Clean up and Organize

Clutter around the house can create unsafe and unsanitary conditions. Not only that, it will also make it more difficult for emergency personnel to enter your home in the event of an accident or health problem. If you want to remain independent in your golden years, tackling that mess will go a long way towards showing your loved ones you’ll be safe at home. You can try to clean up on your own but if you’re having trouble, professional organizers may be able to help you get started.

Don’t be Afraid of Technology

Smartphones, tablets and computers aren’t just about mindless entertainment; they can also help you maintain your independence as you age. A cell phone or tablet can be the perfect way to stay connected with friends and family, plus it will allow you to easily contact help in case of emergencies. Some companies even make gadgets specifically designed for seniors who haven’t used them before, so don’t be afraid to come out of your shell and try something new.

This February, we encourage you to celebrate National Senior Independence Month by making some positive changes in your life to help you remain independent. At American Senior Communities, helping our residents maintain their independence is a high priority. If you or a loved one is interested in making the transition to a senior living community, we want you to know that our entire program is designed around providing support while still allowing you to maintain your independence.
