Volunteering in a Senior Care Community

At American Senior Communities (ASC), you’ll find volunteers donating their time in a variety of ways to improve the lives of our patients and residents. And visitors will also discover that residents from our communities are actively involved in volunteer projects that benefit nearby nonprofit organizations. It all contributes to the vibrant lifestyle ASC is known for.

In honor of National Volunteer Month in April, we take a look at the health benefits of volunteering during retirement. We’ll also share how you can join the volunteer team at an ASC location close to you.

Health Benefits of Volunteering During Retirement

Older adults who volunteer their time enjoy better mental and physical health, as well as higher life satisfaction, than their peers who don’t spend time in service to a cause. Studies show that the estimated nine million adults aged 65 and older who volunteer every year benefit in many ways. Seniors who engage in at least 100 hours of volunteer work a year have lower rates of depression, greater independence, and longer life expectancy.

Researchers believe volunteering provides people with a sense of purpose they may have been lacking. That purpose encourages senior volunteers to stay active and socially engaged, often at a time when they no longer have a structured workday.

Older adults may turn to volunteerism after the death of a spouse or other loved one. They often say it gives their days meaning again. Volunteering can also offer single seniors a chance to meet new people and expand their social circle. This can help prevent the isolation aging experts say is linked to poor health in seniors.

The key to a rewarding volunteer experience seems to be connecting with an opportunity you feel passionate about. For many people, that can be found in senior care communities.

Volunteer Your Time at an ASC Community

If you’d like to make a difference in the lives of older adults, there are plenty of ways to do that at your local ASC community. Here are a few ideas to consider:

  • Share your talent or passion: Do you have a hobby or skill that you can teach or share with others? Because ASC is committed to offering a wide range of daily activities for residents and patients to enjoy, we are always looking for volunteers for life enrichment programs. For example, if you have a lifelong passion for gardening, you might show residents how to assemble a container herb garden or plant a cutting garden in a raised flower bed. Technology is another area that residents are always interested in exploring. Residents appreciate both classes and volunteers who are willing to mentor in one-on-one settings. Think about what you like doing and talk with the team at ASC about the best way to share your knowledge.
  • Provide companionship: Because ASC communities offer a range of senior care services, we are often in need of volunteers to sit and talk with people recovering from an injury or surgery or navigating a chronic illness. These patients and residents may have a tough time participating in group activities because of their health condition or a mobility challenge, so they appreciate having a friendly face to chat with on a regular basis. You could also play cards together or read to a resident with vision loss. The only criterion is a willingness to spend time with an older adult.
  • Assist with special events: Senior living communities like ASC typically host a variety of special events, including holiday parties, open houses, and family nights. Volunteers play a key role in these events. They can help with everything from giving tours to registering guests and helping with setup. It’s a great way to get started and then explore the community’s other volunteer needs.

Make a Difference: Volunteer at an ASC Community

The first step to connecting with a volunteer opportunity at ASC is to complete our quick form. You’ll be asked for some basic information, such as your name, phone number, and email address. And you’ll need to indicate which of our Indiana locations you are interested in helping at. Once you submit the form, an ASC team member will be in touch!
